Hedberg Hill

Hedberg Hill Retail order form June 2017

Hedberg Hill
Hedberg Hill is a 5.6hectare vineyard at Orange in the Central Tablelands of NSW owned by Peter and Lee Hedberg.  We are just 3km from the edge of Orange at 701 The Escort Way (Forbes Road) on the left hand side of the second hill west of Orange.

The vineyard is at 880m elevation and provides a wonderful view of Mount Canobolas (1396m) and Young Man Canobolas (1330m) – as depicted on our wine label.  The winding Molong Creek below provides a pretty valley scene as it drains headwaters from the high country to the Macquarie River in the West.

Our Cellar door was opened in June 2010 to share our dream with friends and visitors.  The wine labels reflect our family members: our two daughters Lara and Claudia, nephew Guy, Lee and Peter, and our dogs Beau and Oscar.

Our wines are mostly made by Madrez Wine Services in Orange.  Lucy Maddox and Chris Derrez have an excellent winery in the Towac Valley and have won many awards and trophies with Orange Region wines.  Peter is also now making the red wines at the cellar door, re-activating his wine making skills from Griffith in the 1970-80's.

The Orange Wine Region
The Orange Region extends around Mount Canobolas to 600m elevation in the Shires of Cabonne, Blayney and Orange City.  Over 70 vineyards now grow some 1500ha of winegrapes to produce over 10,000 tonnes annually.

The Orange Wine Region claims to be the highest and sunniest cool climate wine region in Australia. Cool sunshine is the key to growing quality grapes and making wines of high colour and flavour.

The high sunshine hours per day in Orange occurs as we are well clear of the coastal cloud caused by The Great Dividing Range.  The high elevation and thinner atmosphere also increases sunlight intensity.

The coolness of Orange (19-21ºC Mean Daily Temperature in Jan/Feb) comes from the high elevation of vineyards around Mount Canobolas at 1395m.  This extinct volcano provides a wide range of vitcultural climates as the elevation falls to 300m only 40km away.  This high undulating country also provides relative safety from frosts as our cold air flows to lower regions in valleys below.

The volcanic activity of Mount Canobolas has added basalt and other igneous rocks to older shales, tuff, limestone and even older sandstones.  This mix of geology has provided the region with a wide range of soils for grape growing.  The high country basalt derived soils extend down to 600m elevation providing another criteria for the region boundary.

A comprehensive review of the Orange wine region is available in a recently published booklet "Orange Region Terroir".  This booklet is available from Taste Orange (www.tasteorange.com.au) and most cellar doors  ($5) and can be downloaded from Wines of Orange (www.winesoforange.com.au).
